It's official, short hairstyles are the trend for 2023. Trendy cuts like the shag and French bob are amongst the most asked for hairstyles at the moment, but these are about to be rivalled by a new key trend dubbed the “shixie”.
What makes the "shixie"
The shixie combines the best of two hairstyles: the shag and the pixie, hence the name.
"Current mullet trends remind me a lot of the shags I used to cut in the 80s," says hairstylist Jayne Matthews in her Instagram video about the trend. The shag's many steps and textures play a role in the look in particular, but so does the playfulness of the pixie. Even those who want to grow out a pixie are perfectly served with the "shixie". And vice versa - those who haven't yet dared to take the leap and get a short cut can try out the “shixie” first.
Who does the "shixie" suit?
The great thing about the “shixie” is that it can be adapted to any face shape thanks to the many different ways it can be worn. More angular or rounder faces alike have different “shixie” cuts that work for them, and likewise almost all hair textures look good with the cut. For fine hair, the many layers visually adds volume, and for curly hair, weighted sections can be taken out.
How to cut the “shixie”
"First, you take the weight out of the hair, especially at the back of the head below the ears," explains stylist Jayne Matthews in the video.
“I add heavy steps to make the cut fit the wearer.” And then? "Above the ears, I leave the weight a little heavier and just trim the ends." That way, the stylist explains, the result is a little more casual, and some length is retained.
How to style the "shixie"?
Because of the many layers, the "shixie" is a really low-maintenance cut, with little styling effort required. It looks great styled straight as well as with slight waves or curls, which, if you don't have any, can also be added to the hair with a curling iron. One thing to note, though, is that you should always alternate the direction of the curls to achieve the intended effortlessly textured result.
