- TikTok has its own instant messaging service built in, complete with an Inbox to store your conversations.
- To share a video with a custom message, tap the Share icon on a video's page in your video feed.
- You can also go directly to your Inbox page and write new messages or reply to an existing conversation.
TikTok isn't just a video hosting platform where people can watch short-form video; it's also a social media app that lets you send direct messages to other users. The messages can include shared videos, emojis, and reactions to videos, or just text ordinary messages. Whether you use an iPhone or Android device, you can easily send a message to someone on TikTok.
TikTok collects all your direct messages in an inbox, which you can find by tapping the Inbox tab at the bottom of the screen. Here you can read, send, and reply to messages. But in addition to the inbox, you can send messages with videos you want to share from TikTok's video feed.
How to message someone on TikTok while sharing an video
1. In the TikTok app, find a video you want to share. You might encounter a video while browsing TikTok, or you can use the Search button at the top of the page to find a specific piece of content.
2. Tap the Share button on the right.
3. In the Send to pop-up window, tap the user you want to share the video with. You can select as many people as you like, and each one will have a check mark through its profile icon.
4. Tap on Write a message and enter any message you want to include with the shared video.
5. When you're done, tap Send.
How to message someone on TikTok in a chat
In the TikTok app, tap the Inbox icon at the bottom of the screen. Then do one of these things:
- Tap the New Message icon at the top of the screen. Choose the person you want to message and then enter your message in the Send a message field. Tap the Send icon. This option is convenient to start a new conversation with someone you haven't messaged before.
- Tap a conversation in your Message list. Then write a message in the Send a message field and tap the Send icon. This continues the conversation already in progress.
Quick tip: You can reply to a specific message or video in a conversation, even if it isn't the most current post in the chat. Tap and hold the message or video, then tap Reply or an emoji. It appears in your conversation with special "quoted" formatting.
