- The four "Hunger Games" movies featured a few major deaths, primarily due to the annual tournament.
- Some of the most poignant deaths in the series include Rue, Prim, Finnick, and Mags.
- Warning: Major spoilers ahead for all four "Hunger Games" films.
19. President Coriolanus Snow
Snow (Donald Sutherland) was the president of Panem and Katniss' (Jennifer Lawrence) main antagonist throughout most of the series.
An elite member of high society and native ruler of the Capitol, Snow tried to snuff out rumors of rebellion early on but couldn't stop Katniss and Peeta's (Josh Hutcherson) influence from igniting what became a full-fledged revolution.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2"
Cause of Death: Snow was mobbed and killed by his citizens in the chaos of Alma Coin's (Julianne Moore) assassination.
Sadness Ranking: 1/10
Katniss had her eyes set on avenging the Districts and eliminating President Snow for years. But in the end, she decided to take out Coin and leave Snow to perish at the hands of his own people.
His long-awaited death felt pretty justified after all the destruction he caused.
18. Alma Coin
Katniss held Alma Coin in esteem until she proposed that Panem hold a final symbolic Hunger Games using the Capitol's children as the contestants.
After Prim (Willow Shields) dies in a bombing at the Capitol, Katniss realizes that Coin orchestrated the attack in order to sow seeds of distrust in Snow's own government.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2"
Cause of Death: Katniss struck Coin in the heart with an arrow after watching Prim die.
Sadness Ranking: 1/10
Despite allying herself with the side of the rebellion, Coin proved that she was only ever after power. Her betrayal was unexpected, and Katniss helped prevent a second war by dealing her the death blow.
17. Marvel
In the first film, Marvel (Jack Quaid) was a career tribute from District 1 who'd been training for the Hunger Games his whole life.
After being tasked by Cato (Alexander Ludwig) to track down Rue (Amandla Stenberg), Marvel threw the spear that killed her.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games"
Cause of Death: Katniss shot Marvel in the chest with an arrow after Rue was hit.
Sadness Ranking: 2/10
It's difficult to sympathize with Marvel considering the fact that he killed Rue. But it's easier to feel a degree of sadness for the children killed in the Hunger Games than for the leaders who staged them.
16. Clove
Clove (Isabelle Fuhrman) was the female tribute from District 2 and one of Katniss' main adversaries in the first film.
She allied with the other career tributes, was highly skilled with knives, and was the first to spill blood in the 74th Hunger Games.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games"
Cause of Death: Beaten to death by Thresh (Dayo Okeniyi) after taunting Katniss about Rue's death.
Sadness Ranking: 2/10
Clove sadistically taunted Katniss about Rue's death, leading Thresh to believe that Clove was directly responsible for murdering his partner. Although she didn't kill Rue herself, her arrogance and cruelty led to her death.
15. Glimmer
Glimmer (Leven Rambin) was a career tribute from District 1 alongside Marvel.
She killed tributes from District 6 and District 8 before stumbling upon Katniss hiding in a tree while scouring the grounds with the other careers and Peeta.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games"
Cause of Death: After Katniss cut down a tracker-jacker nest in the tree she was hiding in, Glimmer was swarmed and killed by the stings of the genetically engineered wasps.
Sadness Ranking: 2/10
Like the other career tributes in the 74th Hunger Games, Glimmer wasn't innocent — she was in fact trying to kill Katniss before the nest was cut down. Although the rest of her alliance escaped to the lake, she met her brutal end.
14. Foxface
Foxface (Jacqueline Emerson) was the female tribute from District 5 who finished fourth in the 74th Hunger Games.
Her real name was never actually revealed, but Katniss dubbed her "Foxface" due to her appearance.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games"
Cause of Death: She ate poisonous nightlock berries in the Hunger Games arena.
Sadness Ranking: 3/10
Foxface displayed high intelligence and expertise in plant knowledge during training prior to the games, so Katniss speculated that she intentionally poisoned herself because she was slowly starving.
13. Cato
Cato was Clove's tribute partner from District 2.
As the leader of the career tributes, he was one of Katniss and Peeta's biggest opponents in the arena. He ultimately finished in third.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games"
Cause of Death: Cato was mauled by muttations (aka mutts) at the end of the Hunger Games. He begged Katniss to speed up his painful death, which she did via an arrow to his head.
Sadness Ranking: 4/10
In Cato's final standoff against Katniss, he goads her into shooting as he says, "I'm dead, anyway! I always was, right? I didn't know that until now." He ends his speech by mouthing "please," which makes Katniss pity him enough to speed up his death.
His final speech solidified that he knew they were always just pawns in Snow's tyranny.
12. Seneca Crane
Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley) was the Head Gamemaker of the 74th Hunger Games who created the arena.
He allowed Katniss and Peeta to walk out alive together rather than kill themselves in a show of rebellion — a decision that enraged President Snow.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games"
Cause of Death: After Katniss and Peeta emerged victorious together, Crane was escorted to a locked room with only a bowl of nightlock berries inside. He died off-screen after presumably ingesting the poison.
Sadness Ranking: 5/10
Crane facilitated the Hunger Games, which caused a lot of death. But without his game-ending decision, the revolution never would've begun.
11. Castor
Castor (Wes Chatham) was one of the Capitol's camera-crew members sent along with Katniss to capture footage of her in support of the rebellion.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2"
Cause of Death: While traveling through an underground passage of the Capitol, Castor was killed by bloodthirsty lizard mutts.
Sadness Ranking: 6/10
Although he was a more minor character, it was hard to watch Castor's brother, Pollux (Elden Henson), cry out in utter grief after his death.
10. Mitchell
Mitchell (Joe Chrest) was a soldier tasked with protecting Katniss when her team was sent to infiltrate the Capitol.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2"
Cause of Death: When an explosion triggered a brainwashed Peeta to attack Katniss, Mitchell tried to intervene and was shoved away into a pod that released a barbed net.
Sadness Ranking: 7/10
Although he was a very minor character in the film, Mitchell's death was extremely alarming.
9. Boggs
Boggs (Mahershala Ali) was Coin's second-in-command and Katniss' main protector as the group navigated their way to the Capitol.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2"
Cause of Death: While checking if the coast was clear for the rest of the group, Boggs suffered fatal injuries from an explosive land mine.
Sadness Ranking: 8/10
With his dying breath, Boggs warned Katniss not to trust "them" in an attempt to clue Katniss in on Coin's nefarious motives. He proved where his loyalties were within the rebellion.
8. Wiress
Wiress (Amanda Plummer) from District 3 was one of the returning victors in the third Quarter Quell.
She was reaped alongside Beetee (Jeffrey Wright) and was rejected as an ally by everyone except Katniss.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"
Cause of Death: During the games, Gloss (Alan Ritchson) from District 1 slit Wiress' throat.
Sadness Ranking: 8/10
Wiress' repetitive looping of the words "tick tock" allowed Katniss and her allies to figure out early on that the arena was designed like a clock. She proved invaluable until she was quietly killed off-screen, to Katniss' dismay.
7. Chaff
District 11 tribute Chaff (E. Roger Mitchell) was the victor of the 45th Hunger Games and reaped again for the third Quarter Quell of returning tributes.
He was Haymitch's (Woody Harrelson) best friend, and he was the first to join hands with Katniss in solidarity on Caesar Flickerman's (Stanley Tucci) show before the games.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"
Cause of Death: Chaff was killed off-screen during the games by Brutus (Bruno Gunn) from District 2.
Sadness Ranking: 8/10
Chaff made it to the top eight in the third Quarter Quell. He was one of the last to die just minutes before Katniss destroyed the force field that led to the remaining tributes' freedom.
In the wake of his death, Peeta killed Brutus to avenge him.
6. Thresh
Thresh was the tribute from District 11 who was reaped alongside Rue for the 74th Hunger Games.
The career tributes attempted to recruit him to their alliance, but he refused. He also gave Katniss a chance to run free instead of killing her as a peace offering for protecting Rue.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games"
Cause of Death: Once he avenged Rue, Thresh was killed off-screen by a pack of wolf-like mutts designed by Gamemakers to hurry along the end of the games.
Sadness Ranking: 8/10
His death felt unjustified and unfair after he tried to play the games in an honorable way.
5. Mags
Mags Flanagan (Lynn Cohen) was the victor of the 11th Hunger Games and competed in the third Quarter Quell for District 4 alongside Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin).
She volunteered to take the place of Finnick's love Annie Cresta (Stef Dawson) at the reaping.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"
Cause of Death: When acid fog spread throughout the arena on the second day of the Quarter Quell, Mags sacrificed herself so Finnick could help Katniss carry an injured Peeta.
Sadness Ranking: 9/10
Katniss and Finnick tried desperately to carry Mags and Peeta while still outrunning the deadly fog. But Mags chose to sacrifice herself so the rest of the group could save themselves.
4. Cinna
Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) was Katniss' stylist for the 74th and 75th Hunger Games.
Through fiery outfits and hidden symbolism, he helped turn her into the Mockingjay and spur the rebellion that propelled her into the spotlight.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"
Cause of Death: When Katniss was being launched into the arena, three Peacekeepers attacked and carried Cinna away. Katniss later learned that he was killed during government interrogation.
Sadness Ranking: 9/10
Katniss and Cinna's final scene together was incredibly touching. That made it even harder to watch as guards tore him away the moment Katniss entered the tube to the arena.
3. Finnick Odair
Finnick was a tribute from District 4 who was mentored by Mags before their second reaping in the third Quarter Quell.
Finnick proved to be a steadfast friend to Katniss in the arena and beyond. In the last film, he finally married his love, Annie.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2"
Cause of Death: While navigating the tunnels of the Capitol, Finnick was attacked by lizard mutts. Katniss shot him out of mercy to speed up his painful death.
Sadness Ranking: 10/10
After all the hardships that Finnick faced, including walking away alive from two Hunger Games, his death in the final film was devastating.
He never received the happy ending he fought so hard for, but he was survived by Annie and their infant son.
2. Rue
Rue was a 12-year-old tribute from District 11 who befriended Katniss early on in the 74th Hunger Games.
She decided to trust Katniss because of her Mockingjay pin, which reminded her of the birds in her hometown. In turn, Katniss kept Rue safe because her humor and sweetness reminded her of her sister.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games"
Cause of Death: Rue was speared by Marvel after getting caught in a net during the games.
Sadness Ranking: 10/10
Katniss stayed by Rue's side until the bitter end, singing her a lullaby, burying her with bright flowers, and giving a three-finger salute to the cameras out of respect for Rue's district.
Rue's death was heartbreaking and reverberated throughout the entire series.
1. Primrose Everdeen
Prim was Katniss' gentle and nurturing little sister, and she loved her more than anything in the world.
Prim was originally chosen as the District 12 tribute at the reaping for the 74th Hunger Games, leading Katniss to volunteer in her stead.
Time of Death: "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2"
Cause of Death: Prim perished in Coin's staged bombing of the Capitol as Katniss tried to reach her.
Sadness Ranking: 10/10
Prim's unexpected death was horrific. It nearly destroyed Katniss because it seemed to unravel everything she fought for from the beginning.
In the wake of her sister's death, Katniss killed Coin to break the endless cycle of violence that had traumatized the citizens of Panem for generations. But Katniss' life still remained hollow without Prim in it.
